Over the past few years, artificial intelligence has entered many areas of everyday life. Yet its application to generating children's stories remains little known — and the results can be remarkable. Here is how it works in practice.
What is an AI-personalised tale?
An AI-personalised tale is a story generated in real time by a language model (such as OpenAI's GPT-4o) from information provided about the child. Unlike a traditional book that tells the same story to every reader, each generation produces a unique tale tailored to a specific child.
In practice, the application receives information such as:
- The child's name and age
- Their favourite characters (dinosaurs, unicorns, robots…)
- The chosen setting (space, forest, sea, medieval times…)
- The desired educational value (courage, sharing, self-confidence…)
- The length and reading level adapted to their age
And within seconds, a unique story is generated — with the child's name as the main hero.
How GPT-4o builds a story
GPT-4o is a language model trained on billions of texts, including a large amount of children's literature, fairy tales, and narrative fiction. It has "learned" narrative structures: introducing a hero, encountering an obstacle, resolution, and moral.
When Noctilio gives it a "prompt" (a detailed instruction), the model generates a coherent text adapted to the stated age, with appropriate vocabulary and calibrated length. For a 4-year-old, sentences will be short and vocabulary simple. For an 8-year-old, the story will be longer and the plot twists more elaborate.
✦ Important: GPT-4o never generates exactly the same story twice. Even with identical parameters, every generation is unique — as if a storyteller were improvising each evening.
The illustration: an image generated for each story
In addition to the text, Noctilio generates a unique illustration for each story using gpt-image-1, OpenAI's image generation model. The image is created from the story's content and the visual style chosen by the parent: Ghibli, Comics, Pixar, Watercolour, or Cinematic.
The result is an image that matches exactly the main scene of the story — not a generic picture found on the internet, but an illustration created specially for that tale.
Limitations to be aware of
AI is powerful, but it is not perfect. Here is what parents should know:
- Narrative consistency: very long stories can sometimes show slight inconsistencies. Noctilio calibrates the length to avoid this problem.
- Repetition of structures: if you generate many stories with the same parameters, similar patterns may appear. Varying the settings and educational values helps keep things fresh.
- Content: despite filters and safety instructions, we recommend that parents read the stories alongside their children, especially for younger ones.
Why this is different from traditional books
Children's books are wonderful, and nothing replaces the quality of a picture book carefully crafted by a human author and illustrator. Noctilio does not seek to replace books — but to complement the bedtime ritual when improvised stories run dry, when the usual book has already been read 47 times, or when your child wants a story featuring exactly their favourite characters in a world they invented themselves.
AI offers a level of personalisation and availability that books simply cannot match. Every evening, a new story crafted for your child.
